Kishan has come a long way as an Interior designer since he did his first Interior project in 1996. Timber designs has executed more than 300 projects in residential, commercial offices and showroom interiors. He is very passionate about his work and personally stays on top of every project. But less that we know, Kishan is a theater personality and he wanted to be an actor. During his school days, he has acted and directed several plays and wanted to make it his profession. He was a star in inter-school fests and many cultural programs. By the twist of events, he enrolled to engineering and passed out as a Civil Engineer. Kishan also did Interior designing as specialty. He attributes the change of career to his uncle, Mr R Kasinath, who is an architect.
Kishan joined his uncle’s firm after graduation and started assisting him in construction of apartments. In one of their buildings, a client asked for interior work as well. Since Kishan had already done an Interior course, he wanted to try his hand. It was a 3 bhk apartment. Clients were very happy and he ended up doing 15 more projects in the same apartment. During this time, Kishan transitioned himself into a full-fledged Interior designer. Then, he wanted to get more rounded as a professional and that made him look out for a job in bigger companies. He went on to become Head of Design and Costing in Firepro Global Infrastructure(FGI). Kishan also worked at Hometown and was among the first team who started “Design and Build” in Hometown.
In 2010, during the recession, Kishan took a chance to move out and started Timber Designs. His first project was School Interiors for Edifice schools. Since then, Timber Designs has done Interiors for apartments, Jewelry and retail showrooms, software companies, mechanical Industries, spa and saloons, hotels among others. Kishan’s civil engineering background significantly helped him to understand the technicalities of the infrastructure work when came to larger projects. Kishan’s success roots from his ideology of helping clients to get what they want rather than forcing what he can give. He encourages his clients to see around and in internet to find things that they like. Then he starts with his design to come up with things that would suit their tastes and utility. It is all about fitment of their needs and desires in the space that they have without sacrificing the functionality and look.
Kishan’s expertise is his intuition and the ability to visualize the space when he sees a floor plan and gets all the requirements from his clients. It is not a cookie cutter model. This is one of the core strength of Timber designs and their ability to communicate and make clients see what they visualize. When comes to commercial interiors, it is all about understanding their business operations, their present clients and the clients whom they want to attract in future. There is a lot of thought and deliberation made before coming up with the design. Yet it has to be simple and usable. Three things that are very important for people looking for home interiors:
- Prioritize what is required in each room and make a list of all the needs and desires for each room. Clarity is very important.
- Don’t fully base your ideas from looking at other houses. It will skew your thinking. What they wanted may be very different that what you want.
- Keep the space minimalist in design and space. It is timeless.
Timber Designs has offices in Bangalore and Hyderabad. Kishan is looking to expand to Chennai and Cochin. His recent venture is taking Homelane franchise in Kanakapura road. He is extremely positive about the venture and it has added value to his clients. Budget for home interiors is between 5 lakhs to 20 lakhs. Timeline to completion is around 30-45 days depending on the space and requirement. They have a record of completing interior projects in as less as 5 days. Timber designs works with many interior designers and architects as their execution partner. Kishan has recently got back to his theatrical passion. He acted in a Kannada short film “Bombeyaata” which has bagged 10 international awards and has been screened in many Film festivals in US, Canada, Russia, Europe and many cities in India.
