Architect Manjunath did architecture from Gulbarga and then Specialized on Cost Effective Sustainable Architecture from Auroville, Pondicherry. In the initial years, he was working with and mentored by Ar.Chitra Viswanathan and L T Chouhan. Then in 1999-2000, he was working in Auroville with Ar Satprem Maini.
Back in 1997, Manjunath was bothered by things such as Environmental and holistic approach to design rather than constraining it. He had lot of concerns about how an architecture should be, concern for clients, environment, social and society. He wanted to solve the problem by giving meaning solutions. Thus was born Concerns Architects. He and his college classmate Ar Hari started Concerns Architects in year 2000.
In the starting days, they focused on Sustainable architecture that was cost effective. It was not popular on those days. Construction was on recast, done in-site only using local resources. Later they diversified to Interiors, Commercial Projects, Institutions, Hospitality, Hospitals and Industries. These are all referrals from their previous customers and their connections. To date, Concerns architects have done over 400 projects of which 250 are residential projects in South India.
According to Manjunath, there is nothing like a good or bad design. It is subjective. As a thumb rule, if the architecture make you feel good, it is good design. It makes you feel happy deep inside, brings solace, creates vibration and gives you comfort. Good design creates what it is really meant for. Next the place has to match the sensitivities. Architecture is interactive. It has to give positiveness, ambiance and space.
Manjunath says that his job is to educate and not to impose design on the client. Client has to be comfortable and should have a sense of belonging. Architecture is a living medium. It should connect, grow and live with people. He feels that getting into the shoes of clients is the only way to do this. It is the dream house of the client and it has to be delivered with all respects.
Manjunath has a beautiful definition for Sustainable architecture. It is becoming more sensible, more humane with your behavior towards nature – Develop deep empathy towards everything around you. Sustainability is not Pseudo. It is a responsibility and common sense. According to him, Architecture and Interiors has to go hand-in-hand. It’s all well thought about from the first interaction with the clients. It was great to see that he does not compromise on Integrity, Honesty and doing Justice to their clients & environment.
Concerns Architects has 30 people working at their offices in Bangalore and Cochin.
